Somedays
I think that swimming is the closest I'll ever get
to Heaven.
Not swimming in a public pool or doing laps at the gym
But diving into icy mountain water
That takes your breath away.
In that instant
After your body has gone down as far as you can make it
Dark green emptiness waiting before you
And your ears pop, your heart beats true
And your lungs are screaming.
In that instant
When you start to float back up
And calm the panic inside you
And feel the water wrapping itself around you
Weightless and free.
In that instant
When you see the different colors
Reflecting the world above you
And you know peace.
When your head breaks the surface
And the sun shines upon your head
And you breathe a smile.
You are washed clean, reborn
In that instant.
